We thought it would be opportune to show this highly acclaimed film on Halloween…It was  waiting for the right night to be viewed and discussed …”Wild tales” (Relatos Salvajes)  is a 2014 Argentine black comedy anthology film composed of six standalone shorts, all written and directed by Damián Szifron, united by a common theme of violence and vengeance  in  surreal situations that are played with gusto by culturally incorrect characters…

It stars an ensemble cast consisting of Ricardo Darín, Oscar Martínez, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Érica Rivas, Rita Cortese, Julieta Zylberberg, and Darío Grandinetti, and was co-produced by Agustín Almodóvar and Pedro Almodóvar. The film’s musical score was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, won the Best Film Not in the English Language at the 69th British Academy Film Awards, and also won the Best Ibero-American Film at the 2nd Platino Awards.

***MONDAY OCTOBER 24th, 2016 *** “THE FRONT” ******* directed by Martin Ritt ***** starring Woody Allen, Zero Mostel and Herschel Bernardi

thefront

It sort of started with Dalton Trumbo who wrote last weeks film “Roman Holiday” when he was still blacklisted in Hollywood and could not write screenplays under his own name and he had to use some other writer as  a “front.” This week film ” The front”  is  directed by Martin Ritt with a story written by Walter Bernstein and features  one of those rare appearances by Woody Allen as an actor, interpreting a certain character in a role of a film from another director…hmmm…i’m curious about what he brings to the character and also there is a super interesting supporting cast featuring; Zero Mostel, Herschel Bernardi, Andrea Marcovici and Michael Murphy…

ONE NEVER KNOWS…

Motion picture pioneer Auguste Lumière  was born in Besançon, France, and his father was a former painter who had taken up photography. Auguste and his younger brother Louis studied science in Lyon, and opened a successful business producing photographic plates. Their father returned home from a trip to Paris in 1894, full of descriptions of Thomas Edison’s new Kinetoscope: a peephole machine that pulled strips of film in front of a light source, creating the illusion of movement. The Lumière brothers began work on a device that would project the images, and in February 1895, they patented their cinématographe, which was an all-in-one camera, developer, and projector. A month later, they shot their first footage of workers leaving their factory in Lyon. They held their first public screening that December, showing 10 short films – each of them about a minute long – depicting scenes from everyday life. One film in particular provoked a strong reaction: the Lumières had filmed a train pulling into a station head-on, and the audience members screamed and scrambled out of their seats, believing the train was about to plow through the screen into the theater.

Auguste Lumière wasn’t much interested in pursuing further developments in motion picture technology, being more interested in medical research. He reportedly said, “My invention can be exploited . as a scientific curiosity, but apart from that it has no commercial value whatsoever.”

MONDAY OCTOBER 17th, 2016 ***** “ROMAN HOLIDAY” ***** directed by William Wyler ***** starring Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn & Eddie Albert

After we saw the film “Trumbo”we became interested in some of the films he had written.
Trumbo was a member of the “Hollywood Ten,”  because he refused to testify before congress regarding his communist ties he was black listed until the early 60s.
Unable to find work in California he moved to Mexico city and continued to write screen plays. He used a pseudonym or other writers as a front. It was during this period he wrote the screen play for “Roman Holiday.” In 1993 Trombo was posthumously awarded an Oscar for this screen play.
