HAMLET (MEL GIBSON), DIRECTED BY FRANCO ZEFFIRELLI, 1990. THE BEST OF THE MANY HAMLET FILMS.
Shakespeare’s tragedy about the young prince of Denmark who is plagued by indecision when he vows to avenge his father’s murder. Filmed on location around the UK, including Stonehaven in Scotland, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast.
Mahalo to Tom and JJ….and our dedicated film audience. Such a privilege to gather together to share our very individual perspectives/responses to important films! I appreciate the honest and spontaneous sharing of perceptions and always come away stimulated and wanting to know more. Since “Hamlet” is perhaps Shakespeare’s most-discussed play, there’s always room for more!!
Aloha my dear friends,
Very happy Cinematiki is returning. Sorry to start out with this dog. Mel Gibson, is just too old to be Hamlet. The Ethan Hawke one is closer to Hamletʻs ideal age (16 to 18 tops), but even he, is too old. Hamletʻs behavior can only be real and truthful in the person of an adolescent. Remember, he has been away at school. Adults in this role can never be believed except to say they must be crazy and crazy doesnʻt elicit sympathy, a key ingredient in cartharsis. Okay said my piece.
A hui hou, Paul A hui hou, Paul
Mahalo see you Monday Larry
