The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola

One response to “The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola

  1. the film opens with an extreme close-up of an italian merchant pleading with il padrino to help him restore honor to his family by doing /enforcing justice for him and thus help him repair the aggravation his daughter suffered and how the American legal system failed him and his family…
thus setting the premise that the legal system have very little to do with justice…
this is probaby the beginning of the Mafia as we know it…
just like the beginning of all acts of resistance in favor of the people through out history from; spartacus to robin hood and from salvatore giulano to che guevara and from micky cohen to roberto peretz…
from the patriotic to the chivalrous and from the heavy dude to the petty criminals…
people from the “hood”, from the village… help each other…
    specially abroad..
before prohibition= first started as protection, then came gambling…
prostitution was a natural and since we had alcohol= what’s next? narcotics…
    notice the word…
    they did not say “drugs”…
    it was narcotics…
this was between 1945 and 1955…
    fast forward to november 2010…
    now…who is being naive?

this is the third or fourth time i see “the godfather” and i’m always surprised by the level of ensemble acting on this film…
and it finally dawn on me that i was captivated by the performances of the actors meanwhile i was being eviscerated by the reality of their choices…
everything they wanted; love, family, peace, money and the time to enjoyed was being consumed by the family wars…
most of the characters in this film lied and/or miss-used the inspirational laws of/for the family of man…
every one of them got corrupted and devoured by the dark forces…
it affected me in so many ways …
everything i know about the mafia i’ve learned from literature and cinema…
and when i first came to america in my teens to new york i saw the don’s sitting at the piano bar @ jonnhy’s keybord on madison ave. and 67th and i got wiser…
the godfather is the most consummated marriage of pulp fiction with a twist and “gangsters movies”…
    created by a magical team…
it contains some of the best death(s) on camera…
luca being garroted meanwhile his hand was impaled at the bar…
the son in law foot coming through the windshield as he is being strangled…
don corleone having a heart attack as he is running on his garden through the tomatoes plants playing scary monster with his grandchild…
the musical score by nino rota plucks at the strings of our italian hearts and never let’s you forget the melody…
looking forward to the next chapter…
